The Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) is a non-profit organization founded in 2006 through a partnership between the Rockefeller Foundation and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Based in Nairobi, Kenya, AGRA works to transform African agriculture from a subsistence model to a sustainable, profitable system that improves the lives of smallholder farmers across the continent. AGRA focuses on several key areas including seed systems development, soil health improvement, market access, policy and state capability, and farmer awareness and adoption of modern farming practices. The organization operates in 11 African countries: Ghana, Nigeria, Mali, Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania, Mozambique, and Malawi. Through its various programs, AGRA provides grants, technical assistance, and training to African agricultural scientists, small-scale farmers, and local agricultural businesses. The organization has been instrumental in developing and releasing hundreds of new crop varieties adapted to local conditions and supporting thousands of agro-dealers who supply seeds and fertilizers to farmers. Despite its achievements, AGRA has faced criticism from some agricultural and environmental groups regarding its promotion of conventional farming methods and use of improved seeds. The organization continues to work towards its goal of increasing food security and reducing poverty among smallholder farmers in Africa.
