About American Sugar Refining

American Sugar Refining (ASR) is the largest cane sugar refining company in the United States, with a refining capacity of approximately 6.5 million tons of sugar per year. ASR is headquartered in Yonkers, New York, and operates sugar refineries in six locations across the country, including Louisiana, New York, and California. ASR was formed in 1891 as the National Sugar Refining Company, and later became known as Amstar Corporation. In 1998, the company was acquired by the British sugar firm Tate & Lyle, and was then sold to Florida Crystals and the Sugar Cane Growers Cooperative of Florida in 2010. Today, ASR is a privately held company. ASR’s products include granulated sugar, powdered sugar, and brown sugar, which are sold under several brands including Domino, C&H, and Redpath. The company also produces a range of specialty syrups and sweeteners for the food industry. In addition to its sugar refining operations, ASR has been involved in a number of joint ventures and acquisitions, including the purchase of several corn syrup and high-fructose corn syrup processing facilities in the mid-1990s. Despite its dominance of the American sugar market, ASR has faced criticism for its business practices, including allegations of price fixing and anti-competitive behavior. In 2014, the company agreed to pay $40 million to settle a class action lawsuit filed by customers who claimed they were overcharged for sugar.
