Appalachia Service Project (ASP) is a Christian nonprofit organization founded in 1969 that focuses on home repair and replacement services for low-income families in Central Appalachia. Operating primarily in Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia, ASP works to make homes warmer, safer, and drier for families in need. The organization coordinates volunteer groups, primarily youth and adult teams from churches and community organizations, to perform essential home repairs and improvements. These projects include roof repairs, floor reinforcement, wheelchair ramp construction, and in some cases, complete home replacement. ASP operates year-round, with its most intensive activities occurring during summer months when volunteer participation peaks. Since its inception, ASP has engaged more than 400,000 volunteers and completed repairs on over 20,000 homes. The organization maintains several base centers throughout the Appalachian region, which serve as operational hubs for volunteer teams and construction projects. ASP also provides educational programs about poverty in Appalachia and promotes awareness of regional social issues. The organization is funded through a combination of donations, grants, and volunteer participation fees. ASP collaborates with local communities, other nonprofit organizations, and government agencies to identify families in need and coordinate assistance efforts.
