Arriva Medical was a mail-order medical supply company based in the United States that specialized in diabetic testing supplies and other medical equipment. Founded in 2009, the company became one of the nation’s largest Medicare mail-order suppliers of diabetic testing supplies. Arriva Medical primarily served Medicare beneficiaries, providing glucose meters, test strips, lancets, and other diabetes management supplies directly to patients’ homes. In 2012, Arriva Medical was acquired by Alere Inc., a global diagnostic device and service provider, in a deal worth approximately $65 million. The company’s business model focused on making diabetic supplies more accessible to patients through direct-to-home delivery services while working within the Medicare reimbursement system. However, in December 2016, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) revoked Arriva Medical’s Medicare billing privileges following allegations of submitting claims for deceased patients. This decision effectively ended the company’s operations, as Medicare patients represented the majority of their customer base. The company unsuccessfully appealed the CMS decision and subsequently ceased operations in late 2017. During its peak, Arriva Medical served hundreds of thousands of patients across the United States and employed several hundred people.
