The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) is a non-profit organization representing 154 accredited medical schools in the United States and Canada. Founded in 1876, the AAMC is committed to improving the nation’s health through medical education, research, and patient care. The organization works to advance medical education and biomedical research, and to promote the quality of life for all through access to medical care, research, and education. The AAMC is also responsible for administering the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT), a standardized exam required for admission to most medical schools. The AAMC serves as a voice for academic medicine, advocating for policies that support medical research and education. It also provides a range of services to its member institutions, including data analytics, leadership development, and professional development for faculty and administrators. The organization’s initiatives and programs include the Medical Education Partnership Initiative, which aims to strengthen medical education and research in Africa; the Health Equity Research and Policy (HERP) program, which supports the development of evidence-based policies to address health disparities; and the Summer Health Professions Education Program, which provides training and support to students from underrepresented groups who are interested in pursuing health careers.
