The Autoridad de Acueductos y Alcantarillados (AAA) is a Puerto Rican government-owned corporation responsible for providing public water supply and wastewater treatment services to the island’s nearly 3.5 million residents. As the only public utility company that provides these services in Puerto Rico, the AAA oversees and maintains the island’s water distribution and sewage collection systems. The AAA was established in 1945 and is governed by a 9-member board appointed by Puerto Rico’s governor. It is headquartered in San Juan and operates more than 125 water treatment plants, over 7,000 miles of water lines, and nearly 6,000 miles of sewage lines across the island. The services provided by the AAA include water treatment, storage, and distribution, as well as the management of wastewater treatment and disposal. The corporation’s main goal is to provide its customers with reliable and efficient water supply and wastewater management services through sustainable and environmentally responsible practices. The AAA has faced various challenges in recent years, particularly in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria in 2017, which severely damaged the island’s water infrastructure and affected the corporation’s ability to provide consistent water and sewage services. The AAA continues to work towards improving its infrastructure and services for the benefit of the residents of Puerto Rico.
