buildOn is a non-profit organization founded in 1991 that aims to break the cycle of poverty, illiteracy, and low expectations through education and service. The organization empowers young people through programs that promote service and social responsibility and transform lives through education in some of the poorest communities in the world. BuildOn has partnered with over 1,500 high schools in the United States and has constructed over 1,400 schools in some of the most impoverished countries in the world, including Haiti, Mali, Nepal, Nicaragua, and Senegal. The organization’s model combines volunteerism, community involvement, and education to provide hope and opportunity for underserved communities. They provide opportunities for volunteers to work alongside local community members in the building of schools and engage in needed service projects such as digging wells, constructing latrines, and supporting literacy and education. BuildOn encourages its students to become agents of change by instilling values of leadership, empathy, and self-sufficiency. Through their programs, buildOn has impacted the lives of over 2 million people and has helped change the trajectory of many communities by fostering equity, education, and opportunity.
