Centenary College, now known as Centenary University, is a private liberal arts university located in Hackettstown, New Jersey. Founded in 1867 by the Newark Conference of the United Methodist Church, it was originally established as Centenary Collegiate Institute. The institution initially served as a preparatory school and women’s college before becoming coeducational in 1988. The university offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs across various disciplines, including business, education, equine studies, and liberal arts. Centenary is particularly known for its Equine Studies program, which is one of the largest and most comprehensive in the United States, featuring state-of-the-art equestrian facilities and specialized degrees in equine business management and training. The institution operates on a 42-acre main campus in Hackettstown and maintains additional locations in Parsippany and Edison, New Jersey. Centenary University is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and holds specialized accreditations for several of its programs. The university’s athletic teams, known as the Cyclones, compete in NCAA Division III as members of the Colonial States Athletic Conference. The university maintains a small student-to-faculty ratio and emphasizes experiential learning through internships, research opportunities, and hands-on training in various fields. Notable facilities include the David and Carol Lackland Center, which houses theater and communication programs, and the Equestrian Center.
