The merger made Citadel the third-largest radio group in the United States. In 2009, Citadel Broadcasting filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy due to heavy debt incurred from the ABC Radio Networks acquisition and the recession. The company emerged from bankruptcy in 2010 under the ownership of private equity firm, Forstmann Little & Company. In 2011, Cumulus Media acquired Citadel Broadcasting for $2.4 billion, becoming the second-largest radio group in the United States. Citadel Broadcasting ceased to exist as a separate entity after the acquisition.
