Columbia Falls Aluminum Company (CFAC) was an aluminum smelting facility located in Columbia Falls, Montana, that operated from 1955 to 2009. The plant was originally built by the Anaconda Copper Mining Company and later owned by the Atlantic Richfield Company (ARCO) before being acquired by Glencore in 1999. At its peak, the facility employed over 1,500 workers and was one of the largest employers in the Flathead Valley region. The plant produced primary aluminum using the Hall-Héroult process, with a maximum production capacity of approximately 180,000 tons per year. Throughout its operation, CFAC was a significant contributor to Montana’s industrial economy and played a crucial role in the development of Columbia Falls as a community. In 2009, the facility permanently closed due to rising electricity costs and declining aluminum prices. Following its closure, the site became the subject of environmental concerns due to contamination from various industrial pollutants, including cyanide and fluoride. In 2016, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) designated the former CFAC site as a Superfund site, initiating a long-term cleanup process to address soil and groundwater contamination. The remediation project continues to be monitored by state and federal environmental agencies.
