COMMUNITY ACTION OF NORTHEAST INDIANA (CANI), now known as Brightpoint, is a nonprofit organization serving northeast Indiana that focuses on addressing poverty and promoting economic self-sufficiency. Founded in 1965 as part of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s War on Poverty, the organization operates across multiple counties in northeastern Indiana. The organization provides various assistance programs including housing services, energy assistance, family development, Head Start early childhood education, and financial literacy programs. CANI/Brightpoint works with low-income individuals and families to help them achieve and maintain economic stability through both immediate assistance and long-term support services. Key programs include the Energy Assistance Program (EAP), which helps eligible households manage their home energy costs; the Housing Choice Voucher Program (Section 8), providing rental assistance to qualifying families; and the Covering Kids & Families program, which helps families access healthcare coverage. The organization also operates the Child Care Development Fund (CCDF) voucher program in several Indiana counties. In 2015, CANI rebranded to become Brightpoint, though its mission and core services remained the same. The organization continues to serve as the designated Community Action Agency for its service area, operating under the framework established by the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964.
