Concordia College Alabama was a private Lutheran historically black college located in Selma, Alabama. Founded in 1922, the institution operated under the Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod and was initially established as Alabama Lutheran Academy. The college served predominantly African American students and was one of the nation’s oldest Lutheran minority institutions. The college offered associate and bachelor’s degree programs, focusing on teacher education, business administration, and liberal arts. Throughout its history, Concordia College Alabama played a significant role in providing educational opportunities to African American students in the Southeast, particularly during the Civil Rights era. The institution faced ongoing financial challenges in its later years, struggling with declining enrollment and mounting debt. Despite efforts to maintain operations, including partnerships with other Lutheran institutions and fundraising campaigns, Concordia College Alabama closed its doors permanently in 2018 after 96 years of service. The closure marked the end of the only historically black Lutheran college in Alabama. During its operational years, the campus was located on a 22-acre property in Selma, and the college maintained accreditation through the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). The institution’s legacy continues through its alumni who served in various educational, religious, and professional roles throughout the United States.
