The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) is a United States government agency created by the Department of Homeland Security to enhance the country’s cybersecurity and protect its critical infrastructure. It was established in 2018 through a bipartisan act of Congress and is headquartered in Arlington, Virginia. CISA’s primary mission is to manage risks to the nation’s critical infrastructure, including physical and cyber threats, through coordination and collaboration with federal, state, and local government partners as well as private industry. It provides guidance and support to these stakeholders, including risk assessments, incident response planning, and information sharing. Additionally, CISA works to develop and implement cybersecurity policies and standards for the federal government, assist in the protection of election systems, and provide cybersecurity resources and training to the public. The agency is led by the Director, appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate, and operates with a staff of nearly 2,000 employees. CISA collaborates with other federal departments and agencies, including the National Security Agency and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, to fulfill its mission to protect the country’s critical infrastructure from cyber and physical threats.
