About Defense Threat Reduction Agency

The Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) is an agency of the United States Department of Defense (DoD) charged with reducing the threat to the United States and its allies from weapons of mass destruction (WMD). Created in 1998, DTRA consolidated the Defense Special Weapons Agency and the On-Site Inspection Agency. DTRA’s mission is to enable the U.S. military, partner nations, and interagency partners in order to counter and deter WMD and improvised threats. They achieve this by developing and delivering innovative solutions; fostering partnerships to promote global security; collaborating with others to minimize the harm from WMD incidents; safeguarding sensitive information; and advancing the United States’ global nuclear security agenda. The agency consists of warfare support, research and development, and operational support divisions. Its budget is allocated to programs that include combating weapons of mass destruction, chemical and biological defense, nuclear proliferation detection, technology development, and global partnership building. DTRA is headquartered in Fort Belvoir, Virginia, but also has offices in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Kaiserslautern, Germany. The agency is led by the Director of the Defense Threat Reduction Agency, who is a senior military officer or civilian executive appointed by the President of the United States.
