The agency conducts inspections at all stages of production, from the farm to the table, in order to prevent foodborne illness and ensure that products are correctly labeled and packaged. In addition to inspection and enforcement, FSIS also conducts research and education programs to improve food safety and public health. The agency collaborates with other federal and state agencies, industry, and consumer groups to promote safe food handling practices, and to develop and implement new technologies and methods for ensuring food safety. FSIS also maintains a 24-hour hotline for consumers to report food safety concerns, and provides guidance and resources for businesses and consumers on safe food handling, cooking, and storage practices.
