Golden Northwest Aluminum Holding was an aluminum manufacturing company based in The Dalles, Oregon. The company operated two aluminum smelting facilities in the Pacific Northwest: one in The Dalles, Oregon, and another in Goldendale, Washington. These plants were originally part of Martin Marietta Aluminum before being acquired by Commonwealth Aluminum in the 1980s. The company faced significant challenges in the early 2000s due to the Western energy crisis, which led to dramatically increased electricity costs. Aluminum smelting is an energy-intensive process, and power costs represent a substantial portion of production expenses. In 2003, Golden Northwest Aluminum Holding filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, citing high energy costs and low aluminum prices as primary factors. During its operational period, the company was a significant employer in both The Dalles and Goldendale communities, providing hundreds of jobs in the region. The company’s facilities had a combined annual production capacity of approximately 240,000 metric tons of primary aluminum. Following the bankruptcy, both smelting facilities were permanently closed, marking the end of decades of aluminum production at these locations. The closure of these plants represented part of a broader trend of aluminum smelter shutdowns in the Pacific Northwest region during the early 2000s.
