Grand Canyon Education, Inc. (GCE) is a publicly traded, for-profit education company headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona. Founded in 1949 as Grand Canyon College, the company originally operated as a non-profit institution until transitioning to a for-profit status in 2004. GCE is primarily focused on providing undergraduate and graduate degree programs, as well as certificate and diploma programs, in disciplines such as education, healthcare, business, and liberal arts. In addition to its traditional campus-based programs, GCE also provides online education through its subsidiary, Grand Canyon University (GCU). GCU offers over 200 academic programs, serving over 70,000 students from all 50 states and over 150 countries. The online programs operate on a flexible, asynchronous schedule that allows students to complete coursework at their own pace. GCE’s revenue primarily comes from tuition and fees, with the majority of its enrollment coming from GCU’s online programs. In recent years, the company has also expanded its presence with several mergers and acquisitions, including the purchase of Orbis Education Services in 2015 and the acquisition of two nursing programs from the Cincinnati-based Mount St. Joseph University in 2018. As of 2021, GCE has over 9,000 full-time and part-time employees, and its stock is traded on the Nasdaq Global Select Market under the ticker symbol “LOPE.” GCE has been accredited by the Higher Learning Commission since 1968.
