The International Typographical Association (I.T.A) was a trade union that represented skilled printing trades workers in North America. It was founded in 1852 and incorporated in 1878. Initially, the I.T.A focused on organizing printers. However, by the early 20th century, the union had expanded to include journalists, pressmen, photo-engravers, and other workers in the printing industry. The I.T.A was affiliated with the American Federation of Labor (AFL) and the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO). During its early years, the I.T.A was involved in strikes and boycotts to improve wages and working conditions for its members. In the early 1900s, the union helped to establish the eight-hour workday for printers. Later on, the I.T.A was also involved in advocating for workers’ rights and supporting various social and political causes. Over time, the printing industry underwent significant changes, including the introduction of computer technology. As a result, the I.T.A faced challenges in adapting to these new technologies and maintaining membership. In 1986, the union merged with the Communications Workers of America (CWA) and became known as the Printing, Publishing, and Media Workers Sector of the CWA.
