Indian Motorcycle is an American motorcycle manufacturer founded in 1901 in Springfield, Massachusetts. It is the first American motorcycle company and is currently owned by Polaris Inc., which acquired the brand in 2011. The company originally operated as the Hendee Manufacturing Company before being renamed Indian Motorcycle Manufacturing Company in 1923. In its early years, Indian Motorcycle dominated both American motorcycle sales and racing events, setting numerous speed records. The company was a major supplier of motorcycles to the U.S. military during both World Wars. However, financial difficulties led to the original company’s closure in 1953. Several attempts were made to revive the Indian Motorcycle brand between 1953 and 2011, with varying degrees of success. Indian Motorcycle maintains its manufacturing facilities in Spirit Lake, Iowa, and competes directly with Harley-Davidson in the American heavyweight motorcycle market.
