The Kansas City Board of Public Utilities (BPU) is a publicly owned administrative agency that provides water and electric utility services to Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas. Established in 1909, BPU operates as a self-funded, non-profit organization and is overseen by a six-member elected board of directors. BPU serves approximately 65,000 electric customers and 51,000 water customers in its service area. The utility operates several power generation facilities, including the Nearman Creek Power Station and Quindaro Power Station, with a combined generating capacity of over 700 megawatts. As part of its commitment to renewable energy, BPU has incorporated wind and solar power into its generation portfolio. The utility maintains extensive infrastructure, including power transmission lines, substations, water treatment facilities, and hundreds of miles of water mains. BPU’s water division processes an average of 36 million gallons of water per day from the Missouri River. As a municipal utility, BPU contributes to the local economy through various payment in lieu of tax (PILOT) programs and community initiatives. The organization is regulated by the Kansas Corporation Commission and adheres to state and federal environmental regulations, including Clean Water Act and Clean Air Act requirements.
