LACOE directly operates specialized schools and programs, including juvenile court schools, specialized high schools, and programs for students with severe disabilities. The organization also provides professional development for teachers and administrators, fiscal oversight of school districts, and coordinates countywide academic programs and initiatives. The office manages various educational support services, including payroll services for school district employees, internet connectivity for schools, and credential monitoring for teachers. LACOE also administers numerous student programs such as Academic Decathlon, Science Olympiad, and the Outdoor Science School. As a public education organization, LACOE is governed by the Los Angeles County Board of Education, which consists of seven members elected by geographic areas. The County Superintendent of Schools, appointed by the Board, serves as the chief executive officer and oversees the organization’s daily operations.
