About Marsh Supermarkets

Marsh Supermarkets was a regional American retail food chain that operated in Indiana and Ohio from 1931 to 2017. Founded by Ermal Marsh in Muncie, Indiana, the company grew from a single grocery store to become one of the largest supermarket chains in the Midwest region. At its peak, Marsh operated more than 100 stores throughout Indiana and parts of Ohio. The company was known for several retail innovations, including being the first grocery store in the world to use electronic scanning equipment for automated checkout in 1974 at a location in Troy, Ohio. They were also pioneers in implementing a loyalty card program and introducing in-store banking services. In 2006, Sun Capital Partners acquired Marsh Supermarkets for approximately $88 million in cash and assumed debt. However, the chain faced increasing competition from larger retailers like Walmart, Kroger, and Meijer, leading to financial difficulties. In May 2017, Marsh filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and began closing its remaining stores. By July 2017, the company had completely ceased operations, with many of its locations being acquired by other grocery chains including Kroger and Fresh Encounter. The closure marked the end of an 86-year presence in the Midwest grocery market.
