MARTA’s rapid transit system consists of four rail lines that run primarily north-south and east-west through the Atlanta metropolitan area. The rail lines connect the city’s downtown core with many of its suburbs and other major employment centers, including Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. MARTA’s bus system includes more than 90 routes that provide coverage to areas that are not served by rail. MARTA is governed by a nine-member board of directors that is appointed by Atlanta’s mayor and the chairpersons of the Fulton and DeKalb County commissions. The agency is funded primarily by a 1% sales tax in Fulton and DeKalb counties, as well as federal grants. MARTA has received a number of awards for its sustainability initiatives, including the American Public Transportation Association’s Outstanding Public Transportation System award in 2009.
