About Maxus Energy

Maxus Energy Corporation was an American oil and gas exploration and production company headquartered in Dallas, Texas. The company operated from 1987 to 1995 before being acquired by YPF, Argentina’s state oil company. Maxus Energy was formed from the restructuring of Diamond Shamrock Corporation’s oil and gas operations. During its operational years, Maxus Energy focused on oil and gas exploration, production, and development activities in both domestic and international markets. The company maintained significant operations in Indonesia, where it held substantial production sharing contracts, as well as in Bolivia and other South American countries. In the United States, Maxus operated primarily in Texas and the Gulf of Mexico. The company faced significant environmental litigation in the 1990s related to the Diamond Shamrock Chemical Company’s operations in Newark, New Jersey, where it had manufactured pesticides and herbicides, including Agent Orange, during the Vietnam War era. In 1995, YPF acquired Maxus Energy for approximately $750 million, marking one of the first major international acquisitions by an Argentine company. Following the acquisition, Maxus continued to operate as a subsidiary of YPF, which was later acquired by Spain’s Repsol in 1999. The Maxus name eventually phased out as operations were integrated into YPF’s corporate structure.
