Metro Networks (later Metro Networks Communications) was a major provider of traffic reporting, news, sports, and weather information services to radio and television stations across the United States. Founded in 1978, the company grew to become the largest traffic reporting service in North America by the 1990s. The company operated a network of aircraft, ground vehicles, and monitoring stations to gather real-time traffic information in major metropolitan areas. Metro Networks maintained relationships with local law enforcement agencies and transportation departments to enhance their traffic monitoring capabilities. Their reporters provided regular updates to hundreds of radio and television stations through both direct broadcasts and affiliate partnerships. In 1999, Westwood One acquired Metro Networks in a deal valued at approximately $900 million, making it one of the largest transactions in radio industry history at that time. The merger created a comprehensive traffic and information service network that served over 2,500 radio and television stations across the country. Under Westwood One’s ownership, Metro Networks continued to expand its services to include digital traffic data and customized content delivery. The brand eventually became integrated into Westwood One’s broader traffic reporting operations, though many local markets continued to use the Metro Networks name for several years after the acquisition.
