Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) is a non-profit organization that operates and manages the power grid across 15 U.S. states and the Canadian province of Manitoba. Founded in 2001, MISO is one of the largest regional transmission organizations (RTOs) in North America, serving approximately 42 million people and managing over 65,000 miles of high-voltage transmission lines. MISO operates as an independent system operator (ISO), ensuring reliable electricity transmission and coordinating wholesale electricity markets. The organization manages the dispatch of power generation resources, maintains grid reliability, and facilitates the buying and selling of wholesale electricity through its day-ahead and real-time markets. The organization’s operational territory extends from the Upper Midwest to parts of the South, including states such as Minnesota, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Louisiana. MISO works closely with its member utilities, power generators, transmission owners, and other stakeholders to maintain grid stability and promote efficient market operations. MISO has been instrumental in integrating renewable energy sources into the power grid, particularly wind power from the Upper Midwest. The organization maintains its headquarters in Carmel, Indiana, with additional operations centers in Eagan, Minnesota, and Little Rock, Arkansas.
