The Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District (NEORSD) is a government agency responsible for water management services for Northeast Ohio communities. It was established in 1972 by the Ohio legislature to address the region’s water quality problems. Today, the NEORSD provides essential wastewater services to over one million people across 62 communities in Cuyahoga, Summit, and portions of Lake and Geauga Counties. NEORSD’s primary mission is to protect public health and the environment by managing wastewater and stormwater. It provides a range of services including treating wastewater at its nine water resource recovery facilities and managing the collection system that transports wastewater from homes and businesses. The district also manages stormwater to minimize flooding, improve water quality, and protect the environment. NEORSD is governed by a 14-member board of trustees appointed by the mayors of the member communities. The district is funded through user fees and property taxes and operates with an annual budget of approximately $300 million. Thanks to its efforts, NEORSD has significantly reduced pollution in Lake Erie and its tributaries, contributing to the overall improvement of the region’s water quality.
