ORMET Primary Aluminum Corporation was an American aluminum manufacturing company based in Hannibal, Ohio. Founded in 1956, the company operated one of the largest aluminum smelting facilities in the United States, with six potlines capable of producing approximately 270,000 metric tons of primary aluminum annually. The company’s main facility was situated along the Ohio River, which provided strategic advantages for transportation and shipping. The Hannibal plant employed approximately 1,000 workers at its peak and was a significant economic contributor to the Ohio Valley region. ORMET also operated an alumina refinery in Burnside, Louisiana, which supplied raw materials to the Hannibal smelter. In 2013, ORMET filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, citing high electricity costs and low aluminum prices as primary factors. Despite attempts to restructure and negotiate more favorable power rates with utility providers, the company permanently closed its Hannibal operations in October 2013. The closure marked the end of more than five decades of aluminum production at the site. The Burnside Terminal facility in Louisiana was later acquired by Impala Terminals, which continues to operate it as a bulk materials handling and storage facility, though no longer specifically for aluminum production.
