Outdoor School is an educational program based in Oregon that provides hands-on, outdoor learning experiences for students. Founded as part of the Multnomah Education Service District (MESD), the program primarily serves fifth and sixth-grade students throughout the Portland metropolitan area and surrounding regions. The program operates multiple residential sites where students spend several days immersed in environmental education. During their stay, students participate in field studies focusing on soil, water, plants, and animals while developing an understanding of natural resources and environmental stewardship. The curriculum integrates science, social studies, and outdoor skills, aligned with Oregon state educational standards. A distinctive feature of Outdoor School is its student leader program, where high school students serve as volunteer counselors, gaining leadership experience while mentoring younger students. These “student leaders” undergo specific training to facilitate activities and support the learning experience. The program has been operating since the 1960s and received significant support through Measure 99, passed in 2016, which allocated state lottery funds to ensure that all Oregon fifth or sixth-grade students have access to a week of Outdoor School. The organization partners with local school districts, environmental organizations, and community groups to deliver its programming.
