In 2012, Philadelphia Energy Solutions was formed as a joint venture between The Carlyle Group and Sunoco. The company faced significant financial challenges due to changing market conditions and regulatory requirements, leading to its first bankruptcy filing in 2018. Following a devastating explosion and fire at the Girard Point refinery in June 2019, PES filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection for the second time and subsequently announced the permanent closure of its operations. The closure marked the end of an era in Philadelphia’s industrial history and had significant economic implications for the region, including the loss of approximately 1,000 jobs. The site has since been acquired by Hilco Redevelopment Partners, which plans to transform the 1,300-acre property into a mixed-use industrial complex.
