Polestar Performance AB is a Swedish premium electric vehicle manufacturer headquartered in Gothenburg, Sweden. The company was established in 1996 as Flash Engineering, later renamed to Polestar Racing, and was initially Volvo’s official motorsport partner. In 2015, Volvo Cars acquired Polestar Performance, and in 2017, Polestar was reestablished as a standalone electric vehicle manufacturer, jointly owned by Volvo Cars and its parent company Geely Holding Group. The company focuses on high-performance electric vehicles and operates as a design-focused, technology-enabled manufacturer. Polestar’s first production model, the Polestar 1, was a limited-edition hybrid performance coupe launched in 2019. The company’s first all-electric vehicle, the Polestar 2, was introduced in 2020 as a direct competitor to the Tesla Model 3. The Polestar 3, an electric SUV, was launched in 2022. Polestar operates using a direct-to-consumer sales model through its retail locations called “Polestar Spaces” and online platforms. The company has manufacturing facilities in Chengdu, China, and plans to expand production to the United States. In 2022, Polestar became a publicly traded company through a SPAC merger and is listed on the Nasdaq under the ticker symbol “PSNY.”
