Built between 1923 and 1928, the Tudor Revival-style mansion was originally the home of cosmetics magnate Carl Weeks and his family. The property was designed to replicate King’s House in Salisbury, England, incorporating authentic 16th-century English manor architectural elements. The house features 42 rooms and spans approximately 22,500 square feet. The property includes significant architectural details, including original English oak woodwork, Gothic and Tudor elements, and authentic medieval stone carvings. The mansion houses an extensive collection of fine art, rare books, and historical documents. Since 1954, Salisbury House has operated as a museum and cultural institution under the management of the Salisbury House Foundation, a non-profit organization. The foundation maintains the property and its collections while offering educational programs, cultural events, and public tours. The venue also serves as a location for special events, weddings, and corporate functions. The property was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977 and has been recognized as one of Iowa’s most significant historical and architectural landmarks. The museum’s library contains over 3,500 rare books, including first editions and original manuscripts dating back to the 16th century.
