The San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI) was a private art school founded in 1871 in San Francisco, California, making it one of the oldest art schools in the United States. The institution was known for its contributions to fine arts education and its influence on contemporary art movements, particularly in the San Francisco Bay Area. SFAI operated from two primary campuses: the historic Chestnut Street campus in Russian Hill and the Fort Mason campus in the Marina district. Throughout its history, SFAI attracted notable faculty and alumni, including photographers Ansel Adams and Annie Leibovitz, painters Richard Diebenkorn and Mark Rothko, and numerous other influential artists. The school offered both undergraduate and graduate programs in fine arts, with emphasis on painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, and new media. In July 2020, SFAI announced it would cease its degree programs due to financial difficulties exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. The institution officially closed in July 2022 after 151 years of operation. The school’s extensive archives, including important works of art and historical documents, were transferred to the University of California, Berkeley. The closure marked the end of one of America’s most historically significant art education institutions.
