Sawnee Electric Membership Corporation (Sawnee EMC) is a member-owned electric cooperative headquartered in Cumming, Georgia. Founded in 1938, the utility provides electrical service to approximately 185,000 residential and commercial accounts across seven counties in northern Georgia, primarily serving Forsyth County and portions of Cherokee, Dawson, Fulton, Gwinnett, Hall, and Lumpkin counties. As a non-profit cooperative, Sawnee EMC operates under the principle of returning excess revenues to its members in the form of capital credits. The organization maintains over 11,000 miles of power lines and is one of the largest electric membership cooperatives in Georgia. Sawnee EMC is a member of Green Power EMC, which allows the cooperative to offer renewable energy options to its members. The cooperative is governed by a nine-member board of directors elected by the membership. Sawnee EMC participates in various community initiatives, including educational programs and scholarships for local students. The utility also operates a comprehensive outage management system and provides members with digital tools for account management and energy usage monitoring. The organization is a member of the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) and follows the seven cooperative principles established by the International Cooperative Alliance.
