Founded in 1962 in Green Bay, Wisconsin, ShopKo primarily served rural communities and offered a broad range of merchandise, including apparel, home goods, and electronics. In 2018, Sun Capital Partners announced that it was closing all ShopKo stores due to declining sales and mounting debt, officially filing for bankruptcy on January 16, 2019. Following the announcement of its closure, ShopKo began liquidating all merchandise in its stores and closing its brick-and-mortar locations. The company ceased all operations later in 2019. Despite its unfortunate end, ShopKo served as a significant retailer and employer in many rural communities for over half a century.
