The Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD) is a regional governmental agency responsible for managing and protecting water resources in a 16-county area of west-central Florida. The district’s management area covers about 10,000 square miles and includes portions of Charlotte, Citrus, DeSoto, Hardee, Hernando, Highlands, Hillsborough, Lake, Levy, Manatee, Marion, Pasco, Pinellas, Polk, Sarasota and Sumter counties. SWFWMD was created in 1961 by the Florida Legislature to protect water resources and manage water supply to prevent flooding and protect water quality in the district. Their mission is to manage and protect water resources using scientific principles in the best interest of the public and the environment. The district works to balance water needs for people, industry and agriculture while protecting the environment and natural systems. They also collaborate with local governments, stakeholders and citizens to develop and implement water resource plans and projects, including flood control, water supply management, surface water and groundwater quality protection, and environmental restoration. SWFWMD is governed by a 13-member Governing Board appointed by the Governor and confirmed by the Florida Senate. The board is responsible for setting policy and making decisions on district programs and projects. The district is funded through property taxes, permit fees and state and federal grants.
