Sympoz was an American educational technology company founded in 2010 by John Levisay, Josh Scott, and Todd Tobin in Denver, Colorado. The company initially launched as an online learning platform offering interactive video-based courses in various creative disciplines. In 2011, Sympoz rebranded its consumer-facing platform as Craftsy, which became its primary focus and most successful venture. The platform specialized in providing high-quality video instruction for creative hobbies and skills, particularly in areas such as quilting, knitting, cooking, cake decorating, photography, and other crafts. Craftsy’s business model combined elements of e-commerce with online education, allowing users to purchase individual classes or access content through subscription plans. In 2017, NBCUniversal acquired Sympoz and its Craftsy platform for a reported $230 million. Following the acquisition, the platform underwent several changes, including a rebranding to “Bluprint” in 2018, though it later reverted to the Craftsy name. The company’s innovative approach to online learning helped establish a new paradigm for digital education in the crafting and creative skills space, combining professional instruction with an engaged community of learners. Throughout its independent operation, Sympoz secured several rounds of venture capital funding from investors including Access Venture Partners, Foundry Group, and Tiger Global Management.
