The Texas Medical Association (TMA) is an influential organization and the largest physician group in Texas which represents over 53,000 physician and medical student members. The organization was founded on May 2, 1853, making it the oldest medical organization in Texas. TMA provides various support services to its medical community, including education and advocacy for physicians, information and referrals for consumers seeking health-related services, and professional guidance on state regulations affecting their practice. The association’s mission is to “improve the health of all Texans” through effective physician-patient relationships which focus on high-quality medical care, preventive medicine, and health education. TMA provides continued education for physicians, including CME courses and seminars, and advocacy for medical issues, such as tort reform and Medicaid payments. The TMA is headquartered in Austin, Texas, and operated by a staff of professional employees led by the Board of Trustees consisting of physicians representing various medical specialties. The organization is also a recognized leader in healthcare emergencies, such as hurricanes, pandemics, and disaster response. In addition to representing physicians, the TMA has also partnered with state and local health organizations to provide health care access to underserved populations through Medicaid and other programs.
