Union County is a county located in the northern section of the U.S. state of New Jersey. As of the 2019 Census estimate, the county’s population was 556,341, making it the seventh-most populous of the state’s 21 counties, an increase of 5.1% from the 2010 United States Census, when its population was enumerated at 536,499, in turn an increase of 13,958 (2.7%) from the 522,541 enumerated in the 2000 Census retaining its position as the seventh-most populous county in the state. Union County was formed on March 19, 1857, from portions of Essex County; it was the last of New Jersey’s 21 counties to be established. Many historic locations dating back to the American Revolutionary War era are to be found in the county, including the remains of Revolutionary War forts, the Battle of Springfield, Liberty Hall – the ancestral home of the Livingston family, and the house where Aaron Burr supposedly plotted his coup against Alexander Hamilton. Union County is also home to Kean University and the Union County Performing Arts Center.
