The United States Capitol Police (USCP) is a federal law enforcement agency responsible for protecting the United States Capitol building and the members of Congress and their staff. The agency was established in 1828 and is headquartered in Washington, D.C. The USCP is responsible for conducting security checks at the Capitol building and protecting its occupants, while also coordinating with other law enforcement agencies when necessary. The agency is composed of over 2,000 personnel, including sworn officers and civilian employees, and operates a variety of units, including the Dignitary Protection Division, the Threat Assessment Section, and the Special Operations Division. In addition to their protection responsibilities, USCP officers are trained to respond to emergency situations, including active shooter incidents and bomb threats.
