It was founded in 1886 as the Delaware Conference Academy, and became the Eastern Shore Branch of the University of Maryland in 1948. The institution was granted full university status in 1970. With a student population of approximately 3,500, UMES is one of only four historically black land-grant institutions in the United States. The university has a diverse student body and offers a range of extracurricular activities, including athletics, student organizations, and community service programs.
