The Utah Department of Corrections (UDC) is a state government agency responsible for managing and operating the correctional facilities and adult probation and parole services in the state of Utah. Established in 1850, the department oversees two primary state prison facilities: the Utah State Prison in Draper and the Central Utah Correctional Facility in Gunnison. In 2022, the Draper facility was relocated to a new state-of-the-art complex in Salt Lake City. The department manages approximately 6,500 incarcerated individuals and supervises over 18,000 offenders on probation or parole. UDC employs more than 2,200 staff members, including correctional officers, administrative personnel, and treatment specialists. The agency operates under a mission focused on public safety through secure supervision and rehabilitation opportunities. Key functions of the Utah Department of Corrections include inmate housing, medical and mental health services, educational and vocational programs, substance abuse treatment, and community corrections. The department also maintains specialized units such as K-9, SWAT, and Investigations.
