Utica School of Commerce (USC) was a private for-profit college located in Utica, New York. Founded in 1896, it was one of the oldest business schools in the United States. The institution specialized in providing career-focused education in business, administrative, and technology fields. The college operated three campuses across New York State: its main campus in Utica and branch campuses in Canastota and Oneonta. USC offered associate degrees and certificates in programs such as business administration, administrative assistance, medical coding and billing, and information technology. Throughout its history, Utica School of Commerce maintained strong ties with local businesses and industries, providing practical education that aligned with workforce needs. The institution was accredited by the New York State Board of Regents and the Commissioner of Education. In 2016, after 120 years of operation, Utica School of Commerce announced its closure, citing declining enrollment and changing educational landscape as primary factors. The school officially ceased operations in 2017, with arrangements made to help existing students complete their programs through teach-out agreements with other local institutions. During its operational years, USC educated thousands of students who went on to work in various business sectors throughout central New York.
