About Walter Reed Army Medical Center

Walter Reed Army Medical Center (WRAMC) was a United States Army medical center located in Washington D.C. It was named after Major Walter Reed, a U.S. Army physician who led the team that discovered the cause of yellow fever, and was established in 1909. WRAMC was one of the Army’s largest medical centers, providing a full range of medical services to military personnel and their families. The medical center included multiple institutes and clinics, including the National Intrepid Center of Excellence for Traumatic Brain Injury and Psychological Health and the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research. The medical center had a long history of serving military personnel and their families, including providing care during times of war. During World War I, WRAMC treated over 150,000 patients, and during World War II, it served as the primary Army hospital in the Washington, D.C. area. In 2011, the Army consolidated its medical facilities in the Washington area, and the Walter Reed Army Medical Center closed its doors. Its services were transferred to the new Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. However, the legacy of WRAMC and the contributions it made to military medicine continue to be recognized.
