Blimpie is an American submarine sandwich restaurant chain established in 1964 in Hoboken, New Jersey. The company was founded by three friends: Tony Conza, Peter DeCarlo, and Angelo Baldassare, who were inspired by the submarine sandwiches popular in their native New Jersey. The name “Blimpie” was chosen because the founders thought their sandwiches resembled blimps in shape. The restaurant chain is known for its made-to-order submarine sandwiches, which are prepared fresh in front of customers using bread baked on-site daily. Blimpie differentiates itself from competitors by slicing meats and cheeses to order and stacking ingredients in a specific way that became known as “the Blimpie Way.” In 2002, Blimpie was acquired by Kahala Brands, a franchise company that owns several other quick-service restaurant chains. Under Kahala’s ownership, Blimpie has expanded its menu beyond traditional submarines to include wraps, salads, and other healthier options.
