Tony Packo’s is a restaurant chain based in Toledo, Ohio, known for its Hungarian-style hot dogs and other Eastern European cuisine. Founded in 1932 by Tony Packo during the Great Depression, the restaurant began as a sandwich and ice cream shop on the east side of Toledo. The establishment gained national recognition when it was repeatedly mentioned on the television series M*A*S*H by actor Jamie Farr, who played Toledo native Maxwell Klinger. The restaurant’s signature item is the “Hungarian Hot Dog,” which features their proprietary sweet-hot pickles and mustard relish. Tony Packo’s is also famous for its tradition of having celebrities sign hot dog buns, which are then displayed in cases throughout the restaurants. This tradition began in 1972 when actor Burt Reynolds signed a bun during a visit. The company has expanded to multiple locations throughout the Toledo area and has developed a retail food business, selling its products in grocery stores across the Midwest. In 2011, after facing financial difficulties, Tony Packo’s was acquired by Bennett Management Corporation, though the restaurants maintain their original recipes and traditions. The original Front Street location remains a popular tourist destination in Toledo and has been designated as a historic site by the city.
