The Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) is a bureau within the United States Department of the Interior responsible for the conservation and protection of fish, wildlife, and their habitats. Established in 1940, the FWS is charged with managing and enforcing federal laws related to conservation, including the Endangered Species Act, the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, and the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act. The FWS is comprised of more than 9,000 employees across over 700 locations throughout the United States, including national wildlife refuges, fish hatcheries, ecological services field offices, and regional offices. The agency works in partnership with state and tribal governments, as well as non-governmental organizations, to manage more than 150 million acres of land and water in the United States. The agency’s primary responsibilities include conserving threatened and endangered species, restoring and enhancing fish and wildlife habitats, managing migratory birds, regulating the import and export of wildlife, and enforcing federal wildlife laws. The FWS also supports recreational opportunities such as hunting, fishing, hiking, and wildlife watching on public lands. The FWS is regarded as one of the world’s preeminent wildlife conservation organizations, with a mission to conserve, protect, and enhance fish, wildlife, plants, and their habitats for the continuing benefit of the American people.
