San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance (SDZWA) is a non-profit conservation organization headquartered in San Diego, California. Founded in 1916 as the Zoological Society of San Diego, the organization rebranded to its current name in 2021 to better reflect its global conservation mission. The alliance operates two major facilities: the San Diego Zoo in Balboa Park and the San Diego Zoo Safari Park in Escondido. The organization is known for its pioneering work in animal care, species conservation, and wildlife research. SDZWA manages one of the largest zoological membership associations in the world and maintains a collection of over 15,000 rare and endangered animals representing more than 700 species. The alliance is actively involved in over 140 conservation projects across 45 countries. SDZWA’s Institute for Conservation Research conducts vital work in genetic studies, animal behavior, reproductive biology, and wildlife disease. The organization has been instrumental in successful breeding programs for endangered species, including the California condor, giant panda, and rhinoceros species.
